The Barbara and David Mertes Scholarships
Dr. Barbara Mertes (1930–2015), a lifelong Livermore resident, was a transformative figure in the founding of Las Positas College and served on the college district board of trustees for 14 years. Her dedication to education and community service has left a lasting impact on both the college and the Livermore community. In recognition of her passion for the arts and education, the Barbara Fracisco Mertes Memorial Performing Arts Transfer Scholarship was established to support students pursuing their educational and artistic goals.
Her husband, Dr. David Mertes (1931–2014), a renowned educator and community leader, was a founding member of the Las Positas College Foundation. As Chancellor of the California Community College system, David played an instrumental role in shaping higher education in California. He also made significant contributions to healthcare through his leadership with the ValleyCare Health System and Rotary International, establishing medical programs in Yugoslavia and Russia. In honor of his dedication to both education and healthcare, the Barbara and David Mertes Memorial Scholarship – ValleyCare was created to support students committed to the field of healthcare and community service.
Together, Barbara and David’s legacy lives on through these scholarships, which continue to inspire and support the next generation of students in their academic and professional pursuits.
