Promising First Responders Scholarship
This scholarship, established by Dr. Patricia “Pat” Wheeler, a dedicated educator, volunteer, and therapy dog handler, is in support of students pursuing a career as first responders. Dr. Wheeler is widely known at Las Positas College for her visiting therapy dogs, who have made a profound impact on individuals in a variety of settings. All of her therapy dogs have earned the AKC Therapy Dogs Distinguished title and the Good Citizen Award, and have provided comfort and healing at assisted living homes, homeless shelters, for returning veterans, children with chronic illnesses, and more.
Dr. Wheeler’s deep commitment to service extends beyond her work with therapy dogs. She has authored two books, Successful Tails and Therapy Dogs in Action, sharing heartwarming stories of the extraordinary impact therapy dogs can have. Additionally, Dr. Wheeler is an accomplished flute musician who has performed in numerous concert bands and continues to engage in local service organizations, including Phi Delta Kappa, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and volunteering for Veterans Affairs.
Having traveled to over 50 countries and all continents except Australia, Dr. Wheeler’s global perspective and dedication to service inspire us to carry forward her legacy of compassion and giving.
This scholarship aims to support students who share Dr. Wheeler’s passion for service and community, especially those pursuing careers in first response. We encourage applicants who are committed to making a positive difference in their communities and embody the spirit of kindness and dedication that Dr. Wheeler has demonstrated throughout her life.
